So many different things lead us to various interests in our life, including what we read. I started into fantasy with middle grade books, around the age of 10 or do. That was when I discovered The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe. I moved on from the series pretty quickly to Tolkien, which I did not care for, and Anne McCaffrey, who became one of my favorite fantasy authors of all time. I especially identified with Menolly from the Harper Hall series. A pre-teen girl often needs a hero and Menolly was mine.
After that, I found my way into romance, mostly via the Zebra novels available easily at the local drugstore. Oh yes, they were quite spicy! I was about 14 when I discovered Summer of the Unicorn by Kay Hooper (ignore the awful modernized cover – see original here in this blog post). What an amazing idea, this combination of romance and fantasy. It really hooked me.
If you read fantasy and/or romance, what started you? Was it a book or other media that drew you into the genre(s)?
